Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of Tenerife and also the second most populated city of all the Canary Islands with a population of over 200,000.
The city came into being at the beginning of the last century after its growth from its port and commercial activities spread to overtake the area of La Laguna. Most of the growth was due to the fact that it was made a free port in 1852.
Santa Cruz is city with extensive areas of landscaping, tree lined avenues and an excellent choice of parks. There is the maritime park designed by Cesar Manrique next to the old trade docks which, are used for recreational purposes. One of the most popular parks is the park of "Garcia Sanabria" which has trees from all over the world towering over the dense exotic vegetation.
Puerto de La Cruz
The oldest tourist area but not only of Tenerife but also of all the Canary Islands. Puerto De La Cruz is still the main tourist area in the north of the island after over a century. Puerto de La Cruz is a cosmopolitan city with an excellent range of quality hotels and self catering apartments.
The Botanical Gardens date back to 1789 is located in Taoro Park which is where the casino is also located. The Botanical Gardens contain trees and plants from all the continents on the planet.
There is an airport in the north of the island, however most airlines use the airport in the south of Tenerife as the resorts of Playa De Las Americas and Los Cristianos are more popular. The airport is also affected by the weather, which can disrupt flights in the winter months. It is also not unusual to get a lot more cloud in the north of the island so the sun worshipers tend to head to the south.
La Orotava
La Orotava is located on the banana plantations of the valley, which bears the same name. The centre itself has been declared a national monument of artistic and natural interest. The Parish Church and Balconies House (Casa de los Balcones)
are considered as excellent examples of the islands traditional architecture. In this region there are also lots of walking paths which cover parts of the National Park area around Mount Teide. Well worth visiting for the day for a break from lying at the beach or pool in your holiday resort. Get out and see the real Tenerife.
Los Realejos
Los Realejos is located under the shadow of one of the slopes of the Las Cañadas del Teide mountain range. It is mainly an area surrounded by large banana plantations despite the growth in tourism from an overspill from Puerto De La Cruz. As in Puerto De La Cruz there are also some very good quality hotels available for tourists. The area also boasts the oldest church on the island, the Santiago Parish which, was constructed in 1498.
La Laguna
La Laguna is the second most popular city on the island, it is the old capital of the island and is still regarded today as the cultural and religious capital.
